The theatrical standards for films competing for the top Oscar award are becoming a little more stringent.
Candidates for best picture at the 97th Academy Awards in 2025 will need to spend longer time in theaters in order to be eligible. The adjustments follow three years of modified release guidelines brought on by the epidemic, which the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced this week.
Best picture contenders would now need to play for an extra seven days in 10 of the top 50 US markets in addition to the present one-week "qualifying run" in one of six US cities: New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, San Francisco, or Miami. There are also a number of new regulations regarding the times that movies must be shown in theaters.
It's a gesture in part for theaters still suffering from the pandemic, in part for audiences outside of New York and Los Angeles who occasionally can't see best picture contenders in theaters, and in part as a warning to well-funded streaming services that theaters still hold a significant amount of importance for Hollywood's top award.
The decision, according to the founders of the film academy, was reached after extensive consultation with industry partners, and they feel that this "evolution benefits film artists and movie fans alike."
